LEG SPRAIN

LOWER BACK PAIN

Question
I've been experiencing back pains for a few years now. It started with a lower back pain, which I thought was due to bad posture but it extended to the middle of the back. I have a long time condition on the top of the spine.I was diagnosed spondilosys, or something sounding the same, a few years ago.I exercise quite a lot but feel it is not enough and that I am probably hurting myself, although I feel much better when I exercise.
My question is what type of doctor should I look for, as I believe it's a muscular problem coupled with some kind of bone problem and where can I find it?I have changed GP several times and every time I mention this problem they say I should avoid X-rays, look at my posture and ignore the situation. I know that there is no cure for most bone problems but I want to try something!I would appreciate it if you could send me some information on doctors, as I am trying to avoid going to my GP again???

Answer

The problem that you describe is not that uncommon but it does sound as if it is really starting to bother you.
From your description, a number of different GPs have suggested that there is no significant back problem, such as a scoliosis or curvature of the spine, which could be accounting for your problems.
I do not know your height and weight, but keeping one's weight under control can lessen symptoms associated with any back problem.
Generally speaking, back problems can be sorted-out very effectively, but treatment is a long-term process that needs the active involvement of the unfortunate sufferer.
Staying active and mobilising your spine might improve your symptoms, but it can take quite a lot of motivation to make lifestyle changes and keep doing the necessary exercises.
In this respect it can be useful to consult a physical therapist; such a physiotherapist, registered chiropractor, osteopath, or an Alexander Technique therapist.
The Alexander technique is based on an American practitioner who observed how standing properly could help chest and spine musculature and prevent back problems.
Chiropractors and osteopaths represent different schools of physical therapy that offer, among other things, manipulation of joints. Both disciplines undertake several years of in-depth training, but they use different approaches to manipulation.
I'm not aware of any comparative studies to suggest one is better. It really comes down to the personal choice of individuals. All of the above therapies can be found under the appropriate headings in the yellow pages.
Failing that, I suggest that you ask the opinion of other people who've consulted physical therapists in your local area and then try the one with the best references.
I do hope this information helps you in managing your ongoing back problems.
